A new edition of the Residents Conference, a new generation of young pulmonologists on stage

Florin Mihălțan, Ruxandra Ulmeanu

The 6th edition of the Resident Pulmonologists Conference was held on 9-10 December in Sibiu, traditionally sponsored by GSK.

Resident Pulmonologists Conference became a traditional event in Romanian Society of Pneumology calendar of events. It is a manifestation which closes the year, ending the season of scientific meetings generated and supported by Romanian pulmonologists. Taking place for the second time in Sibiu, the same welcoming city - this time without the traditional snow - Residents meeting marked the evolution of a new generation of future pulmonologists ready to enter professional life.

Like every year, the organizers sought to attractively split the presentations between the two days of conference. The first day wanted to anchor each Pneumology resident problems and difficulties of everyday medical practice. Romanian School of Pulmonology Directors presence, the two chairmen of Working Groups and a division president guaranteed the transmission of simple, fair messages, detached from everyday medical practice. One by one the seniors addressed in workshops on interesting topics like Respiratory rehabilitation, Smoker’s counseling, Respiratory infections, and a new topic, Personalized medicine practice.

Associate professor Paraschiva Postolache`s team reviewed several tools from the arsenal of a complex department of Respiratory rehabilitation. Practical demonstrations were performed, residents finding out that way some of the most common errors of the assessment and rehabilitation programs, especially some of its programs huge benefits generated in everyday life of respiratory patients. Dr. Corina Mărgineanu and dr. Monica Marc followed, showing various tactics of alternative approach of smokers, thus triggering interactive discussions on various cases assisted in counseling services for smokers. Dr. Dragoș Zaharia addressed another interesting topic, often neglected in the training of future  pulmonologists: “Acute infections of upper respiratory tract and symptomatic medication” - where he addressed the role of symptomatic medication, mucolytics, antitussives and NSAIDs in patients with cough syndromes, given that antibiotics treatments should sometimes be extremely restrictive, and sometimes not. The first day of the conference concluded with a review of the current level of innovation in pulmonology, specifically of personalized medicine and the progress of biotechnology, conducted by a special guest of this conference: dr. Marius Geantă, a well-known personality for his involvement in this thematic area. The presentation was very attractive, proving the arduous but extremely attractive paths travelled by the medical evolution in recent years, due to technical innovations and biotech assault.

Day two was the moment of maximum expression of the 33 participant residents by the offering of interesting case studies they have addressed.

Throughout the day we felt the excitement and stage fright of young pulmonologists who in the competition challenged the senior jurors. Of the activities from this second day of conference we mention: displaying posters on electronic screens, rigorous timing of presentation (10 minutes for actual presentation and 5 minutes for discussion), grading of the performance of each resident by colleagues and by teams of senior moderators.

Posters resident doctors subsequently addressed through oral presentations were divided in 4 sections: “TUBERCULOSIS: INTERFERENCE AND UNIQUE”. “RARE RESPIRATORY DISEASES - SURPRISE ETIOLOGY AND UNEXPECTED DEVELOPMENTS,” “BEYOND NEOPLASIA”, “RESEARCHES AND STUDIES”.

Each resident physician meritorious exceeded this stage. Also the “veterans” of this kind of meeting have demonstrated that previous experiences they have proved helpful. At the end of the day 3 awards for the top three ranked competitors by final score were given in the prize ceremony , and also 3 mentions and 2 special awards given by seniors.

This meeting marked a visible breakthrough for all participants. Each junior experienced all steps needed for the correct composition of a poster for an exercise of oral communication. We believe that the lessons were well learned and also extremely useful.

Objectivity proven by both residents and seniors shown that a fair competition can be created, a competition with one mission: to encourage the debut of the younger generation of future Romanian pulmonologists.
